Dear PR Life Science Hub,

We at Rotate are proud to support the Puerto Rico Life Sciences Community. In addition to continuously updating the data in the dashboard, we wanted to further support the community by highlighting market trends on a monthly basis.

Puerto Rico air cargo capacity is growing again. Outbound capacity grew moderately by +2% on a year to date basis (Jan to mid Apr), reversing the negative trend seen in Jan and Feb this year.

  • UPS sustained its growth since October of last year, when it substantially increased its frequencies to more than 100 flights per month from Puerto Rico to its Louisville hub, Miami, and Jacksonville (see screenshot).
  • Fedex capacity on the other hand is continuing to decline at -16% on a year-to-date basis.

Below image shows total outbound frequencies from SJU and BQN for UPS

Airline capacity evolution

Exporters now have a direct freighter option to Chicago with United, a 2x per week narrow body freighter flight between SJU and ORD, doubling Puerto Rico’s direct capacity to the US cargo hub.

  • United operates the freighter rotation with an Airbus A321F freighter, in partnership with charter airline Global X (Global Crossing Airlines).
  • Total capacity on the route averages 200 to 250 tonnes per month.

Puerto Rico international air exports by air started the year strongly, with 20% tonnage growth (Jan-Feb) vs. 2024. Imports also shows strong growth at +17% in the same timeframe.

  • The main drivers of growth were consumer goods and raw material exports, which more than doubled.
  • However, healthcare exports have declined by -12%, specifically pharmaceuticals which dropped, in the same period (Jan-Feb ’25)
