Puerto Rico’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DEDC) has announced significant cold storage investments for two key members of Puerto Rico’s Life Sciences Air Cargo Community.

Both Prime Air and César Castillo have received significant funding for management improvements within the cold chain ecosystem.

These strategic investments aim to enhance Puerto Rico’s cold chain infrastructure, a critical component for the island’s thriving bioscience sector that produces pharmaceuticals for global distribution.

“This funding represents our commitment to strengthening Puerto Rico’s position as a world-class bioscience manufacturing hub,” said Sebastián Negrón Reichard, Secretary, DEDC

“By investing in advanced cold storage capabilities, we’re ensuring that locally manufactured life-saving products can be safely stored and transported to patients worldwide.”.

Prime Air, which will utilize 100% of their allocated incentive, plans to expand their temperature-controlled facilities near Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

“This investment allows us to implement state-of-the-art refrigeration technology that meets the exact standards required by our life sciences partners. As demand for Puerto Rico’s bioscience products continues to grow, we’re committed to providing the sophisticated cold chain infrastructure needed to support this vital industry,” said Tom Vincent, Prime Air Vice President.

César E. Castillo Belaval, President & CEO of César Castillo LLC, has confirmed they will use approximately 80% of their assigned incentive, to improve their management systems within their cold chain operations.

“This funding enables us to optimize our cold storage processes through advanced monitoring technology and enhanced training protocols. We’re proud to play a role in strengthening Puerto Rico’s pharmaceutical supply chain, ensuring that temperature-sensitive medications maintain their efficiency from production to patient,” said Castillo Belaval.

These investments come at a critical time as global demand for Puerto Rico’s bioscience products continues to rise. The island has seen a steady growth in pharmaceutical and medical device exports, creating the need for expanded and modernized cold chain infrastructure to maintain product integrity throughout the logistics process.

The Puerto Rico Life Sciences Air Cargo Community, a collaboration between government, industry and logistics providers, continues to work toward building a world-class supply chain ecosystem that supports the island’s position as a crucial bioscience manufacturing center.
