Delta Air Lines announced the launch of a new daily wide-body cargo service connecting Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
This expanded service represents a significant enhancement in air cargo capacity between Puerto Rico and the mainland US, particularly benefiting the island’s robust life sciences industry.
Puerto Rico has long been established as a critical bioscience manufacturing hub for the United States, with the sector representing a substantial portion of the island’s economy.
“This new wide-body service demonstrates Delta’s commitment to supporting Puerto Rico’s dynamic life sciences sector,” said José F. Matías, Delta’s Regional Manager for Caribbean Cargo Operations.
“By deploying the 767-300 on this route, we’re providing more reliable capacity and faster connections to global markets through our Atlanta hub.”
The route will offer substantial cargo capacity with the ability to accommodate temperature-controlled shipments, critical for pharmaceutical and bioscience products manufactured on the island.
The service will also provide Puerto Rican exporters with increased access to Delta’s extensive network from Atlanta, reaching hundreds of destinations worldwide.
“Puerto Rico produces vital medications and medical devices that need timely, dependable transportation to reach patients across the globe,” added Matías.
“This new service helps strengthen that supply chain while supporting economic growth for the island.”
This daily service will help ensure that Puerto Rico’s valuable bioscience exports reach their destinations efficiently and in optimal conditions.
